Whether you’re planning a weekend trip, looking for a new bottle, or learning about American whiskey, the Trail helps you discover the people, places, and products behind Maryland rye.

America’s Original Whiskey State

Long before Kentucky became synonymous with bourbon, Maryland had already earned its place in American whiskey history.

Maryland has been producing rye whiskey since the colonial era. Fertile farmland, the Port of Baltimore, and access to major East Coast markets helped make Maryland one of the country’s leading whiskey-producing states during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.

Maryland rye became known well beyond the state’s borders. Barrels shipped through the Port of Baltimore to markets across the United States and overseas. It appeared in some of America’s earliest cocktail recipes, traveled with Union troops during the Civil War, and became so respected that distillers elsewhere marketed their own whiskey as “Maryland Rye.”

Like much of the American whiskey industry, Maryland distilling changed dramatically after Prohibition. Many historic distilleries never reopened, and the style gradually faded from national attention. In recent decades, however, a growing number of Maryland distilleries have begun producing rye once again, leading to the revival recognized today by Maryland Rye Whiskey’s designation as the state’s official spirit.

What Is Maryland Rye?

Legally speaking, rye whiskey must be made from a mash bill containing at least 51 percent rye grain. Beyond that, American rye has room for regional identity.

Maryland Straight Rye is one of the few geographically recognized whiskey designations in the United States, alongside Kentucky Bourbon. To carry that name, the whiskey must be distilled and aged in Maryland while meeting the federal standards for straight rye whiskey.

Historically, Maryland rye developed its own regional identity. Many producers blended rye with a larger proportion of corn than was common in neighboring Pennsylvania, creating a whiskey often described as softer and more approachable while still retaining rye’s characteristic spice. There was never a single official Maryland recipe, and individual distilleries developed their own styles.

That remains true today. Some producers draw inspiration from historic mash bills, while others experiment with local grain, fermentation, barrel aging, and blending. Together, they represent the broad range of what Maryland rye can be.

Maryland Rye Today

Today, Maryland rye is experiencing renewed interest from both producers and whiskey drinkers. New distilleries are entering the category, established producers continue to refine their whiskey programs, and consumers are once again discovering a style that was once nearly lost.

Maryland is home to a growing community of distilleries producing rye whiskey. Some focus on grain-to-glass production using locally grown grain. Others specialize in historic styles, small-batch releases, or innovative barrel finishes. Established producers and new distilleries alike are helping reintroduce Maryland rye to whiskey drinkers across the country.

Together, these distilleries are introducing a new generation of whiskey drinkers to Maryland rye while continuing to expand what the style can become.
